Manchester Pest Control Firm Responds To Surge In Bed Bug Reports; Expert Shares Vital Advice On Avoiding Infestation

In recent weeks, Greater Manchester and East Lancashire have witnessed a significant surge in bed bug reports, with local pest control firm, Pest Control Manchester, experiencing a sharp increase in inquiries. Abbie Glover, the Director of Pest Control Manchester, revealed that their office has observed a startling rise of between 30 and 40 percent in the number of people reaching out to them for assistance with bed bug infestations in the past month. This alarming trend has raised concerns nationwide, indicating a potential bed bug invasion on the horizon.

According to data released by Rentokil last month, there has been a staggering 65 percent increase in bed bug infestations from 2022 to 2023. Moreover, international cities such as Paris have recently battled bed bug outbreaks, while unconfirmed sightings have been reported on the London Underground, intensifying fears of a widespread infestation.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) responded promptly to these concerns, stating that although they have not received any official reports, they are taking proactive measures to prevent potential outbreaks. Upholstery on trams and buses in the region is being subjected to deep cleaning using specialist tools. Additionally, TfGM has mobilized specialist contractors, ready to tackle any suspected outbreaks swiftly.

Abbie Glover expressed her concerns, saying, "We've definitely had an upsurge in people thinking they've got them. We are doing a lot more inspections," highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Understanding the Bed Bug Epidemic

Bed bugs, scientifically known as Cimex lectularius, are tiny, reddish-brown insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals. They are notoriously difficult to eradicate and reproduce rapidly, making them a nuisance for households and businesses alike. Bed bugs are known to hide in cracks, crevices, and furniture during the day and emerge at night to feed, often leaving painful, itchy bites on their victims.

Expert Advice on Avoiding Infestations

Experts emphasize the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to prevent bed bug infestations. Abbie Glover shared valuable advice for residents and travellers to minimize the risk of bed bugs infiltrating their homes or belongings:

1. Inspect Second-Hand Items: Before bringing second-hand furniture or clothing into your home, thoroughly inspect them for signs of bed bugs.

2. Practice Regular Cleaning: Maintain a clean living environment, vacuuming carpets, washing bedding, and cleaning upholstery regularly to eliminate potential hiding spots.

3. Be Cautious While Traveling: Check hotel rooms thoroughly for any signs of bed bugs before settling in. Keep luggage elevated and away from beds and upholstered furniture.

4. Seal Cracks and Crevices: Seal cracks and crevices in walls and furniture to minimize potential hiding places for bed bugs.

5. Early Detection: If you suspect a bed bug infestation, seek professional pest control assistance promptly. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing the spread of these pests.

As concerns about a potential bed bug invasion grow, residents are urged to remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to safeguard their homes and businesses from these resilient pests. By following expert advice and taking necessary precautions, the community can effectively combat the spread of bed bugs and maintain a pest-free environment.
