Retirement Housing. Solution to Loneliness? #Lonelinessawareness

As the life expectancy rapidly increases, the ongoing issue today is Loneliness. 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone. More than a million older people go without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member for a month.

NHS claims that Loneliness can lead to depression and 'serious decline in physical and mental health'.

Retired housing may be the solution to loneliness. Anchor is a non-profit organisation, England's largest housing and care provider for the elderly.

Resident since 2006, Mrs S has given an exclusive statement on Loneliness and retirement housing. "You can be lonely in a crowded room". Mrs S says it can be challenging when a loved one passes.

"Being in a community like Rochester Gate can be a solution. You have the opportunity to make friends, join activities etc."

The main result of loneliness is a loved one passing and a lack of opportunity, whether physical or mental ability.

Mrs S has a supporting family that helps with loneliness, but not everybody has this. Retirement housing may be the solution to maintaining a good quality of life.

Retirement housing provides the opportunity to create a community that supports and provides safety and communication.

Resident since 2016, Mrs K enjoys her own company "you can be in a crowded room and still feel lonely. You must stay positive."

"You don't have to be lonely in Rochester Gate. There is always someone to talk to if you feel the need," Mrs K says.

Retirement housing may be the solution to loneliness; however, it does not mean it may eradicate it "you can still be lonely in a crowded room".

"Younger people can visit, entertain, telephone, write and generally be aware of their wellbeing," Mrs S says.

Loneliness has become more of a problem. The #lonlinessawareness has created a buzz to encourage younger people to take the initiative to say hello.

Retirement housing may be the solution to loneliness; however, the younger generation has a part to play in appreciating the wisdom and wealth of experience that the elderly has to offer.
