Mason Greenwood, the forward for Manchester United, is under suspicion for the rape of his ex-girlfriend Harriet Robson.
On the 2nd of February 2023, a statement was released from the Greater Manchester Police, which stated that the “criminal proceedings against a twenty-one-year-old man in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022 have been discontinued today by the CPS.”
All charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.
According to Hannah Al Othman, “in this case, the combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that has come to light means that there is no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction.”
Manchester CPS Spokesperson said that “in these circumstances, we are obliged to close the file.” The investigation began just over a year ago, in January 2022. A trial date had been set for 27 November 2023.
According to chief Superintendent Michael Kerr, GMP’s head of public protection said, “it was only fair that the force publicized the latest development, given the significant media coverage of this case… The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of notes, so they understood the rationale for discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly. Despite the media and publics interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.”
Manchester United announced on the 30th January 2021 the Manchester United’s striker Mason Greenwood would not return to training with his teammates, and would also not be involved in any games that took place until his court proceeding.
Nike football gear had also suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with Mason Greenwood, and Electronic Arts confirmed that he had been removed from the active England squad at their Fifa 2022 World Cup tournament.
