New Chelsea’s board is breaking the market with the signing of Ukrainian player Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported fee of $86 million. This is the second highest-paid transfer since American businessman Todd Boehly and his firm bought Chelsea FC (Wesley Fofana transfer cost $100 million).

The Blues were leaning to buy Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernández from Benfica, but the Portuguese team was reportedly asking a fee of $120 million. Chelsea FC decided to move on and explore the market and started negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk for the rising star Mykhailo Mudryk.

On January 14, Shakhtar Donetsk announced via Twitter that the club was close to agreeing with Chelsea the transfer of Mykhailo Mudryk. The player was still negotiating personal terms with his future club.

The next day, Chelsea announced they have completed the transfer of the 22-year-old Ukranian international. “I am so happy to sign with Chelsea,” Mudryk said in the press release.

“This is a huge club, in a fantastic league and it is a very attractive project for me at this stage of my career. I’m excited to meet my new teammates and I’m looking forward to working and learning under Graham Potter and his staff,” Mudryk added.

Todd Boehly, the architect of Chelsea's change under the control of this new board reacted to the signing of the Ukrainian rising star.

“We are delighted to welcome Mykhailo to Chelsea. He’s a hugely exciting talent who we believe will be a terrific addition to our squad both now and in the years to come,” Boehly said, “He will add further depth to our attack, and we know he’ll get a very warm welcome to London.”

The right-foot winger comes to add more weapons to Chelsea’s attack. He was directly involved in 18 goals during his tenure in Shakhtar Donetsk just this season. Mudryk also scored three goals and gave two assists in Champions League group-stage matches.

Chelsea defeated their counterpart from Crystal Palace with a score of 1-0. Kai Havertz's headed goal decided the game in favor of the Blues. The club took the opportunity to introduce their new player, Mykhailo Mudryk to the fans. In addition, they announced that the Ukrainian player would wear the number 15 shirt.

Currently, the team led by Graham Potter is tenth in the Premier League standings, ten points behind European positions and 10 points away from qualifying for the next edition of the Champions League. Furthermore, far away from contending for the English championship, 19 points below the leader Arsenal.

Mudryk is the first signing made during Graham Potter's technical direction. International media continue to murmur about a possible arrival of Enzo Fernández despite the large investment already made in Mudryk, apparently, both signings are complementary to Potter's project at the helm of Chelsea. Joao Felix was loaned from Atletico de Madrid with a fee around $14 million for the Portuguese international.
