Nuggets’ First NBA Championship Causes Chaos in Denver

Denver– The Denver Nuggets won the NBA finals on Monday night against the Miami Heat. The Nuggets took care of business in the best-of-seven series against Jimmy Butler’s heat in five games. This is the first time in the team’s 47-year history that they have won a championship.

The Nuggets won 94-89 in a tight game with a nail-biting fourth quarter. Nikola Jokic, the two-time MVP of the league, spoke shortly after the end of the game. "It was an amazing effort by the team. It was an ugly game; we couldn't make shots. But in the end, we figured out how to defend. That's why we won the game."

The 28-year-old center helped his team by contributing a game-high of 28 points and 16 rebounds. After the game, Jokic was recognized with the NBA Finals, “Most Valuable Player” Award.

Road to the Final

The Serbian native had the help of point guard, Jamal Murray, Eric Gordan, Michael Porter Jr., and a strong bench alongside. Denver’s trip to the finals was no easy task. They beat the 8th-seeded Timberwolves, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker’s Phoenix Suns, and swept Lebron’s Lakers in four games.

Head Coach, Michael Malone, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s effort and said, “We accomplished something this franchise has never done before, but we have a lot of young, talented players in that locker room, and I think we just showed through 16 playoff wins what we're capable of on the biggest stage in the world.”

Aftermath

Soon after the title, there was a mass shooting in downtown Denver that police say left ten wounded, five in the hospital, and two arrests were taking place. Police say the incident happened less than a mile away from the stadium on the 2000th block of Market Street, with celebrations of the win going on through Tuesday morning.

Police have also come out to report that none of the celebrations had anything to do with the shooting. Investigators found a significant quantity of fentanyl, signaling that a drug deal had occurred amidst the celebrations.
