Artificial Intelligence: Can We Take a Break from the Future?

Today, as you woke up and subconsciously unlocked your phone by placing the camera in front of your face, then asked Siri to remind you to not forget your wallet before you rush to leave the house for your day out in the world, did you think about how without AI, artificial intelligence, none of this would be possible?

AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been completely taking over our world in the past decade in more ways than one. We see it through things that seem like second nature like unlocking your phone with facial recognition or talking to Siri as if she is your own personal assistant.

We see it through electric vehicles like Tesla and their ability to enhance and develop a new generation of vehicles using computer systems doing the jobs that used to be needed by human beings.

Self-driving cars are rapidly taking over the roads, our phones do most of the work and research for us, we talk to chatbots before a person when we have questions with a company, and TikTok now has a feature where you can use anyone’s voice on the internet and tell them what to say so it sounds real.

Life around us is becoming Intelligence, so what does that mean for people like you and me?

A lot more than we know. There is no room for human error in the society that the next generations will be growing into, and the only thing to do is continue to make AI more useful in the everyday situations that we find ourselves in.

One of the main perspectives for creating AI in the first place was eliminating the very real human error that plagues us daily. We are human because we are far from perfect and make mistakes regularly throughout our life. It is not necessarily a bad thing; it is a part of our DNA to have not only the good parts of being alive but also the not-so-good. However, people from around the world throughout the past few decades, have looked at humans and thought about what if there was a world, we lived in that was perfectly designed and executed with no error.

This thought has turned into a reality incredibly quickly and now we are at a point where there really is no turning back. To live a life without AI would mean completely erasing the past 20 or so years of technological advances, and at this point, that is close to impossible.

With, Elon Musk, the creator of Tesla and a large user of AI has recently come out with a statement to stop Artificial Intelligence for exactly six months. A letter has been written and over 1,000 people in power have signed it with the full intent of wanting to stop experiments and procedures involving AI.

With an immense amount of talk about the power of Artificial Intelligence and how once it gets to a point, it can have a mind of its own, fear is now beginning to rapidly replace the excitement that once used to be felt when describing AI movements.

In the letter we find the words, “...out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one—not even their creators—can understand, predict, or reliably control.” as given to us by Tim Newcomb of Popular Mechanics.

  What do you think?

As the years move forward and we grow into a new society and generation, do you think Artificial Intelligence should be stopped in its tracks or has become so tattooed inside of society and the world that there is no place to turn around?

We are continuously learning more about what Artificial Intelligence can mean for our world, it is incredibly important to take all information in with an open mind, as we are all figuring out what advancing this technology can mean for our world, for our society, and for us.

At the end of the day, the consumer is just as important as the creator, and Artificial Intelligence is just a part of the society we have all created together. The main question at the end of the day is if we want to be able to change the society that we have become so accustomed to because of fear of where it could lead or allowing it to stay the same and hoping that the negative aspects do not outweigh the positives it can bring.

So today, as you look through your phone and live in the world around you, take note of all the places Artificial Intelligence can be found and how it has made a much larger impact on our world than we have fully recognized. Allow yourself to make the decision on if you were given the chance, would you sign the letter Elon Musk and over a thousand others have signed, or would you believe in the future of AI that is growing in every way in our lives?
