India’s 75th Republic Day Celebration

India’s 75th Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 2024, with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest. The infamous Republic Day parade marched down the Kartavya Path in New Delhi as thousands crowded around to witness India’s culture, diversity, and development through its tableaus.

Keeping in line with the themes of this year’s Republic Day–Viksit Bharat (Developed India) and Bharat-Loktantra ki Matruka (India-The Mother of Democracy)–the parade was the first ever to witness an all-female tri-services contingent. The Central Armed Forces contingent, the pilots of the Fly-past, and the Delhi Police contingent were also all women in an astounding display of nari shakti (women power).

The parade began with a visit to the National War Memorial by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following which the Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, and the French Prime Minister arrived at the parade in a traditional buggy, an old practice that was revived after 40 years.

For the first time, France became the first foreign nation to join the fly-past of the Indian Republic Day parade as two French Rafales and one A330 MRTT joined the Indian airspace as they displayed their skills and abilities through different formations such as Arjan, Bheem, Netra, Trishul, Varuna, and Vijay.

In line with the tradition of tableaus being showcased during the parade, 16 state and union territory and 9 ministry tableaus formed a part of the 2024 Republic Day parade. The tableaus focussed on women’s contribution and role in society as Rajasthan’s tableau showcased the Ghoomar dance and Mira Bai’s statue and Madhya Pradesh’s tableau honoured Avani Chaturvedi, the first woman fighter pilot of India. This year, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) tableau focussed on Chandrayan-3’s landing on the moon and the women scientists who contributed to it, while the Air Force tableau found its base in the idea of atma nirbharta (self-reliance).

Adding on to the display of nari shakti (women power) at the 2024 parade, around 1,500 female dancers performed various folk dances from Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam to Satriya and Mohiniyattam.

Marching contingents such as of the Madras Regiment, the Rajputana Rifles, the Sikh Regiment, and the Kumaon Regiment were also a part of the grand parade that made the 75th Republic Day.
