French President Macron to Grace Republic Day Event in Delhi as Chief Guest

In a significant diplomatic development, French President Emmanuel Macron has officially accepted the invitation to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2024. This confirmation marks a pivotal moment in the deepening ties between the two nations, showcasing the growing strategic partnership.

Initially, India had extended an invitation to US President Joe Biden, but his declining due to scheduling constraints opened the door for Macron's presence at the prestigious event. Biden cited commitments related to the State of the Union address, potential re-election considerations, and the intensifying Hamas-Israel conflict as factors preventing his attendance.

Emmanuel Macron's acceptance underscores the evolving relationship between India and France, especially in critical areas such as defense, security, clean energy, trade, investment, and new technologies. This invitation follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's participation as the guest of honor at the Bastille Day parade during the French National Day celebrations in July.

The defense collaboration between the two nations reached a milestone in the same month when India approved the purchase of 26 Rafale (marine) jets from France, primarily intended for deployment on the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. France has promptly responded to India's initial tender for the acquisition of these advanced jets, cementing the strategic partnership in defense.

Beyond defense, India and France are broadening their collaboration in the maritime domain, with a specific focus on the Indian Ocean Region. Both nations have expressed commitment to jointly developing and producing advanced defense technologies, with potential benefits extending to third countries.

Macron's presence at the Republic Day celebrations is expected to further solidify the strategic partnership between India and France, setting the stage for enhanced cooperation in various fields. As the two nations continue to strengthen their bonds, the world watches closely, anticipating positive outcomes from this evolving alliance.
