North Korea fired a “new type of ballistic missile”

On Friday, April 14, North Korea confirmed the success of its new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said: “North Korea seems to have launched a new type of ballistic missile, possibly with solid fuel.” Furthermore, Hokkaido, the Japanese northern island was on alert with an evacuation order and warning telling people to stay inside buildings. Sometime later, the Japanese officials lifted the order, saying it was an error and that the missile could not hit Japan.

According to officials, this launch of a new type of missile powered by solid propellants is a success for Kim Jong-un. Those types of missiles are more difficult to detect and destroy. However, the world reacted to this news starting with the U.S. Presidency's National Security Council spokesperson, Adrienne Watson. Watson said: “This launch constitutes a shameless violation of several United Nations Security Council resolutions, unnecessarily increases tensions, and risks destabilizing security in the region.” She added: “The United States will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of American territory and its allies in the Republic of Korea and Japan.”

Furthermore, Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for Chinese diplomacy said: “The negative impact of the previous United States military exercise and the deployment of strategic weapons around the [Korean] peninsula is obvious to all.” Then, Anne-Claire Legendre, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson asked for “a firm and united response from the international community.” Moreover, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna would be in South Korea on Friday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15 to discuss the North Korean situation.

Stephane Dujarric, the United Nations Secretary-General spokesperson said: “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the launch of yet another long-range ballistic missile by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.” Regarding the non-communication between North Korea and South Korea due to North Korea, in a statement, the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres asked North Korea to “reopen communication channels, and to resume dialogue leading to sustainable peace and the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” Guterres asked for peace and would like a total denuclearization of North Korea.

The reason for those ICBM launches and the intensification of military training is to counterattack the military friendship between South Korea and the United States. According to Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong-un said: [The new missile] will greatly reorganize our strategic deterrence and reinforce the effectiveness of our nuclear counterattack”
