Barbie (2023): First Trailer and First Predictions

The first teaser trailer of the much-anticipated Barbie is available on YouTube and in cinemas before the screening of Avatar: The Way Of Water.

Among the reasons why the public is curious is its stellar cast, which includes the two protagonists, Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and other well-known names in the show business, such as Sex Education’s stars, Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa, as well as Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, and America Ferrera among others.

Moreover, the film is directed by Greta Gerwig, who has become increasingly appreciated after films like Little Women and Lady Bird. Although Gerwig is new to the industry, her style is already well-formed and recognizable.

In many productions, the director has told coming-of-age stories of female characters, and it is imaginable that Barbie will also follow a similar storyline in a comic, ironic, and camp style typical of the director. Furthermore, another Oscar winner involved in the project; is to say, Gerwig’s husband, Noah Baumbach, screenwriter of Marriage Story, who has co-written Barbie with Gerwig.

The authors have anticipated that the storyline will follow a doll living in Barbieland who is banished for not being flawless enough. So, she leaves and embarks on a real-world journey. This is everything we know about the plot so far, and it resembles in many ways, the story of Enchanted. Both girls leave in perfect worlds and suddenly find themselves dealing with our world. In this sense, we can imagine the protagonist of Barbie being as awkward as Giselle when arriving in New York City from her fairy tale world and having a hard time adapting.

When photos of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in costume on set were released during ComiCon 2022, the images left the audience curious and excited for more information about the film. An impressive number of memes making fun of the actors’ eccentric look on set still circulate on the internet, further indicating the rising interest in the film.

The first teaser trailer offers a parody of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. It starts with the voiceover of Helen Mirren recounting the origins of the famous Mattel doll in a glorious tone, presenting the Barbie doll as a turning point on a global scale. In addition to this epic introduction, follow the views of Barbieland and some images from the movie.

In 2018 the documentary Tiny Shoulders, Rethinking Barbie offered a detailed overview of the famous doll and the discussion around it. As the documentary retold, its suitability for little girls was questioned many times, preferring girls to play with baby dolls. However, on the one hand, Barbie is a sexualized representation giving away the image of the ‘perfect woman’; on the other hand, the barbie doll represents a woman who can be and do anything; she can be a dancer, but also an astronaut and a doctor.

Likewise, from a first look at the trailer, Gerwig’s Barbie addresses these conflicting discussions about the most famous doll of all time, a symbol of both canonical femininity and emancipation.

In conclusion, we still do not know in detail what to expect from the film, and other trailers will pave the way to new predictions and analyses as we wait to watch the movie in theatres, set to be released on July 21, 2023.
