History Made at This Year's Grammy Awards

One thing that people can tell about me is that I love cinema, and if you have been reading my articles, you know it.

The fact is simple and pure: I love cinema and often write about it, especially about awards.

However, this morning (UK time), another spectacular award ceremony with nothing to do with films kicked off in Los Angeles.

I am talking about the Grammy Awards, the essential music acknowledgment in the world. So, let’s take a closer look at this year’s winners and nominees.

Surprised but expected. These are the words that can maybe describe how Beyoncé felt last night.

Expected because, after all, she is Beyoncé, and every single song she produces becomes a record breaker, hitting the No.1 place in any music rank around the world.

Therefore, the triumph of the American singer at the 2023 edition was highly expected by the public. Unfortunately, what negatively surprised me is that in a total of four awards won last night, Beyoncé was, once more, unable to bring home the prestigious Album of the Year Award, which went to Harry Styles.

However, no need to be sad for Beyoncé because she was not left with any sour taste in her mouth this year, being officially crowned as the "Grammy Queen." Yes, you heard me. The truth is that with one of her new little golden phonographs, the 32nd precisely, she became the person with the most wins.

As reported by the BBC, ‘Beyoncé made history when she won the best dance/electronic album for her euphoric dance opus, Renaissance. In doing so, she overtook Hungarian-British conductor George Solti, whose record of 31 Grammys had stood for more than 20 years.

However, Beyoncé was not the only one who made history at this year’s edition of the Grammys.

American actress and icon Viola Devis was honored with the Best Audio Book Award for her autobiography Finding Me. By doing so, she became what in the entertainment industry is called an ‘EGOT.’

The tiny and high-profile group of people who reached her same lifetime achievement can be praised themselves to be the best that they can be in the field, having won an Emmy (E), Grammy (G), Oscar (O), and a Tony Award (T).

Over the years, only a talented bunch of artists has been able to obtain this honor, being nominated ‘the best’ in four different sectors by winning the most important awards in television (Emmy), music (Grammy), cinema (Oscar), and theatre (Tony).

Another incredible milestone was achieved at last night's ceremony, with the first transgender woman winning a Grammy Award.

British singer Sam Smith conquered the stage once again, but this time, he decided to let his co-singer accept the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. "Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I'm the first transgender woman to win this award,” claimed German singer Petra, who collaborated with Smith in the successful song Unholy.

The 2023 edition of the Grammy Awards has been rich in surprises and emotional triumphs that have highlighted the most significant present and future talents of the music world.

A magical night that saw Beyoncé conquering a new record of victories, Viola Devis adding a Grammy to her precious awards collection, and Petra challenging social conventions.

But at the end of the day, the excellent results these artists have achieved are not established by any golden statues.

In this regard, accepting the Album of the Year Award, Harry Styles said, "On nights like tonight, it's so important for us to remember that there is no such thing as best in music. I don't think we sit in the studio, making decisions based on what will get us one of these”.

These artists make their decisions based on us, their audience, their followers, and people that bring their music around with them every day to populate their lives and memories with beautiful soundtracks.
