Over the course of the weekend, there has been a feud between, arguably, two of the biggest women in rap. This feud between Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion began when Megan dropped her new song ‘Hiss’.
The line in Megan’s song which appears to be a dig at Nicki and her husband is “These h**s don’t be mad at Megan, these h**s mad at Megan’s Law.” Megan’s Law is the name for a federal law in the United States which requires every state to have sex offender registries, which are available to the public.
Nicki Minaj married Kenny Petty in 2019 and they now have a son together. However, Nicki’s husband is a registered sex offender. He pleaded guilty to the attempted r*pe of a teenage girl in 1995. Petty is now listed as a level two registered sex offender in the state of New York and served four years in prison.
In 2023, Petty was put on house arrest for a year when breaking his probation by failing to register as a sex offender in Los Angeles. Nicki Minaj’s husband was also convicted of manslaughter in 2002, following the death of Lamont Robinson. Petty and a group of friends approached the man and shot him three times, leading him to serve seven years in prison.
Nicki Minaj and Kenny Petty met and dated when Nicki was sixteen years old. They lost touch for many years until they reconciled and got married. Nicki announced her pregnancy in 2020 on her Instagram.
Megan Thee Stallion released her track on January 26, 2024. This was followed by Nicki Minaj’s track ‘Bigfoot’ on January 29, 2024. Nicki counters Megan’s alleged diss with her song, more specifically, the line - “The b***h fell off, I said get up on your good foot”.
Many think this line is in response to Megan’s song because in 2020 Megan Thee Stallion claimed that Tory Lanez was the person who had shot her in the foot. The incident occurred whilst Megan was at a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s house. Three years after her confession, in August 2023, Tory Lanez was sentenced to ten years in prison for this shooting.
Some reports at the time claimed that Megan was not shot, but had been cut by glass. Megan took to social media to tell people via Instagram live that it was Tory Lanez who had shot her. She also used her platform to tell people that the reason she did not tell the police sooner was because she believed them to be aggressive. Therefore, the line in Nicki’s song seems to be aimed at Megan Thee Stallion and her encounter with Tory Lanez.
Many people have taken to social media to pick sides, but to also express their confusion as to why the pair are feuding. Nicki and Megan have worked together in the past on songs such as Super Freaky Girl, and Megan has before expressed how she admires Nicki Minaj.
