Sir Elton John Takes his Final Bow

Sir Elton John took his final bow on 8 July, 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden. BBC News reported on the night's shining moments. Fans flew from every corner of the globe to watch this performance by the musical legend. This was the last show of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour , which began on September 8, 2018 in Allentown, Pennsylvania in the United States. Sir Elton John played for 6 million fans across 333 shows on this tour and grossed over £700 million (approx $900 million). 

 

Sir Elton John’s final bow represents the end of a long and prosperous career in which he spent 50 years touring the world and performing his impressive discography. The 76 year-old musical legend has performed over 4,600 performances throughout his career. 

 

The final show was, as described by Sir Elton, “bittersweet.” The Sweden show represented a full circle moment for the musician as he recounted :"My very first [show was in] Sweden [on] July 7, 1971, so more or less 52 years ago to the day.” Sir Elton reminisced  on his long and prosperous career, sharing with the audience that his career represented "52 years of pure joy playing music".

 

Sir Elton John performed fan favourites such as “Rocketman”, “Tiny Dancer”, “Bennie and The Jets”, “Candle in the Wind” and many more. The show included a video message from Chris Martin, lead singer and guitarist of Coldplay, who was performing in Gothenburg, Sweden at the time, where he shared his admiration for the retiring singer: "From all the bands and artists you've helped and inspired, we love you so much.[...] We are so grateful for everything you've done for the Aids Foundation, anytime you've been kind to anybody,”

 

The singer dedicated his song “Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, to his family, band and crew that made this final tour possible. This tribute was paired with an emotional speech of gratitude to his band and crew who had been travelling with him playing shows for years. Sir Elton told the audience “"They're really incredible,and they are the best, I tell you, the best.".

 

The show wrapped up with the singer performing an encore that consisted of his recent hit song“Cold Heart”, followed by emotional fan favourite “Your Song”. Sir Elton John took his final bow after performing the tour’s namesake ballad, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”
