With dust choking New Delhi again, understand ways you can take care of your respiratory health

When dust storms roll into New Delhi, they bring more than just hazy skies and reduced visibility. They pose a significant threat to respiratory health, leaving residents gasping for clean air.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi experienced powerful winds on Tuesday morning, causing dust to pollute the air and reducing visibility to 1,000 metres. The IMD's daily report indicated that the dust storm is expected to continue for an additional two days until May 18. The sudden gusts of wind lifted some dust particles, impacting the air quality in specific areas of the city.

As New Delhi grapples with this bout of dust storms, it is important to prioritise respiratory health, avoid catching allergies and take necessary precautions. By adopting a few key measures, residents can safeguard themselves from the adverse effects of dust particles. Here are important steps to consider

  • Limit Outdoor Activities: During peak dust storm periods, it is advisable to minimise time spent outdoors. If feasible, remain indoors until the storm subsides.

  • Protective Clothing and Face Masks: When venturing outside, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a face mask or respirator specifically designed to filter out fine dust particles. Don goggles or sunglasses to shield your eyes.

  • Keep Windows and Doors Closed: Ensure that all windows and doors are closed tightly to prevent dust from infiltrating your living space.

  • Hydration is Key: Dust storms can cause dryness and discomfort. Stay adequately hydrated by drinking plenty of water, which helps soothe irritation caused by dust particles.

  • Utilise Air Conditioning or Air Purifiers: If available, use an air conditioner equipped with a filter to purify the air indoors, reducing the presence of dust.

  • Stay Informed: Regularly monitor weather forecasts to stay informed about the severity and duration of the dust storm. Follow official guidelines and updates from local authorities.

  • Prioritise Respiratory Health: Individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions should consult their healthcare provider for tailored advice on managing symptoms during dust storms. Ensure prescribed medications are readily accessible.

By implementing these measures, New Delhi residents can effectively mitigate the impact of dust storms on their respiratory health, fostering a safer and healthier environment for themselves and their families.
