Indigo Flight Delay and Prolonged Passenger Wait leads to Pilot Confrontation

The unsettling footage of the attack, which has gone viral on the internet, also features members of the cabin crew angrily arguing with Mr. Kataria and the IndiGo crew scrambling to assist Mr. Kumar.

The Airbus A20N stalled at the Indira Gandhi International Airport for more than ten hours and was the site of startling physical violence on Sunday due to a protracted delay of an IndiGo Delhi-Goa flight.

Sahil Kataria, a furious passenger, attacked Anup Kumar, the co-captain of the flight, by jumping over a food cart meant to act as a barrier between him and the other passengers. Mr. Kumar was struck at least once before another passenger hauled him off.

A third passenger, who was filming the captain announcing a further delay in departure, captured the incident on camera. According to reports, Mr. Kataraia, currently under the custody of Delhi Police, charged up from his seat in the back row, adding to the concerns about jet safety.

The unsettling footage of the attack, which has gone viral on the internet, also shows members of the cabin staff angrily berating Mr. Kataria and sprinting to assist Mr. Kumar. The crew members said, "You can't do this... you can't do this!" in Hindi. He replied, "Why can't I do this?" How come I can't?"

Then Mr. Kataria yelled, "Khol gate nahi, chala hai to chala... (If you intend to fly, proceed to take off; if not, open the gate.) The voice of someone else is heard saying, "We have been stuck here for hours."

How long the passengers had been held inside the aircraft is unknown.

Onboard IndiGo Flight 6E2175, what happened?

It is what we currently know, while the exact order of events leading up to the assault is still unclear.

At 7.40 am, the Airbus A20N, a short-medium range single-aisle aircraft based on the company's well-known A-320 model, was supposed to take off from Delhi. But, because of unfavorable weather, including thick fog at the IGI Airport, this flight, and many more experienced a delay.

The national capital region had unfavorable weather for several days; a cold front and dense fog caused several daily delays, cancellations, and diversions. At least 168 flights were canceled, and over 100 were delayed this morning.

After nearly ten hours of delay, the IndiGo plane finally took off at 5:33 pm, according to tracking website Flight Aware. The flight landed at 7:58 pm after a regular trip of 145 minutes, or around two and a half hours, at the Goa International Airport in Dabolim.

What was the status of Sahil Kataria?

Mr. Kataria was arrested by the cops after being pulled off the captain.

A police complaint has been filed under many provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 41 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which permits police to make arrests without a warrant, and the offense of "voluntarily causing hurt." Bail is required for all sections charged.
