Manchester City Treble Hopes Alive

London– After Manchester City’s win over rivals, Manchester United, in the FA Cup Final, City inches closer to achieving the impossible. Manchester City needs one more win in the Champions League final to complete the treble.

What is a Treble?

The treble happens when a club wins three pieces of silverware. In soccer, there are two types of trebles. The domestic treble consists of the league, national cup, and secondary national cup. Then, there is the continental treble, made up of the league’s respective title, a European Cup, and a domestic cup. For example, City won the league title (Premier League), secured the FA Cup (domestic championship), and now has to win the Champions League title (European Cup).

City prepares to face Italian giants, Inter Milan, in the final on Saturday, June 10.

Is the Treble Hard?

Only seven teams in the sport’s history have won the continental treble. The last team to win it was the 2019-2020 Bayern Munich team when they won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and the Champions League. Bayern joins the likes of Barcelona, Ajax, Celtic, Inter, Manchester United, and PSV as the only teams to have achieved this in Europe.

City has the chance to make history and be the second team in England to accomplish this achievement. Pep Guardiola, coach of Manchester City, already cemented his legacy by winning the treble with the 2008-2009 Barcelona team. This team is arguably known as the best club team ever to play.

Now, Pep can add to his legacy and win two trebles—a task no manager has ever done.

Manchester City vs. Inter Milan Preview

City defeated United in the FA Cup final in a stunning fashion, following two volley goals from Captain Ilkay Gundugon. The Blues finished the league with the highest win percentage at 74 percent, with 94 goals scored, and only 33 goals conceded. In the Champions League, the Blues are undefeated, according to their last 12 matches, and have an expected 2.58 goal ratio.

On the other hand, Inter is looking to steal the Champions League and secure two titles in the next year. Inter defeated Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final but they are still considered heavy underdogs in this clash between two big clubs. Inter finished third in the Series A table, behind Lazio and Napoli. Inter have pulled off six solid knockout game performances, leading up to the final by beating Porto, Benfica, and AC Milan, and in the process, they maintained five clean sheets.
