Woman’s Act Of Generosity Opens Doors For The Education Of Thousands In Tamil Nadu

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” U. Pooranam gave away this weapon to the children residing in Kodikulam.

The small village of Kodikulam in Madurai witnessed an act of supreme kindness. This happened when U. Pooranam gave her land for the development of a government school. Pooranam, a clerk in Canara bank who hails from Kodikulam itself, did it as a token of love for her late daughter. The value of the 1.52 acres of land stands around 4 crores. It was handed over to the chief educational officer for conversion from a government school to a higher secondary school.

The altruistic act not only held a touch of personal endearment but also served a benevolent cause. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin applauded the philanthropic gesture. He went on and left a tweet which read, "Thousands of students will benefit from Ayi Puranam Ammal's donation. Ayi Ammal, who is a symbol of the Tamil community that values education and teaching as the highest virtue, will be honoured with a special award from the Chief Minister on behalf of the government on the upcoming Republic Day." This was seen to benefit a plethora of students who are underprivileged or come from rural areas. Later, Pooranam received appreciation from other ministers like Su Venkatesan, MP for Madurai who paid her a visit.

The act was a perfect amalgamation of love, loss and generosity. Pooranam’s decision restored the beliefs of many in the spirit of giving. She brushed under the carpet, the common notion of a money-minded society where such actions are rare. The news spread like wildfire throughout the region and also fetched national significance in no time. Chief Minister Stalin also highlighted the fact that the people of Tamil Nadu value education, hence coming up with such a vision is even more laudable. Pooranam not only got love from the residents in the vicinity but won the respect of the nation. Her act is worth appreciation and she will be bestowed with the Chief Minister’s award at the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.
