2024 Met Gala: A Look At Previous Years

The Met Gala is a fundraising gala held for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It is, arguably, the most prestigious fashion event in the world and is also known as “fashion’s biggest night out.” The event usually takes place on the first Monday of May and this year falls on Monday 6 May 2024.

The Met Ball or the Met Gala is known by many different names and the Costume Institute is said to be formally named The Anna Wintour Costume Centre. Anna Wintour has served as editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988. Wintour is one of the most well-known and influential women in fashion. She has been the Chair of the Met Gala since 1995. Anna Wintour oversees the benefit committee as well as the guest list.

The dress code for the 2024 Met Gala is “The Garden of Time.” The co-chairs for the event have been announced. They are Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya. This year’s exhibit is named “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The idea behind this exhibit is that it will be full of pieces which are so fragile and old that they cannot be worn again.

The Met Gala is an event which many people look forward to, not just the celebrities themselves. Many people on social media look forward to the event, and to discussing the outfits worn by celebrities afterwards on platforms such as TikTok.

The Gala has had some iconic themes over the years and even more iconic outfits. One of the most memorable years for people on social media was 2018, when the theme was “Heavenly Bodies”. Some of the celebrities who best followed this theme, according to social media, were Blake Lively who was wearing Versace, Zendaya’s Versace Joan of Arc inspired look, and Cardi B who wore a big head piece and was dressed in Moschino.

Another iconic year was 2019, the theme for the year was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The theme for this was entertaining as it was camp, which led to many stars turning up in over-the-top looks, which perfectly captured the essence of the theme.

In this year, we saw four different Brandon Maxwell looks from Lady Gaga on the red carpet. Three different dresses were showcased, ending with her in an underwear set, tights, and heels. Kendall and Kylie Jenner turned up in matching orange and purple Versace dresses. Cardi B turned up in a Thom Browne dress with a huge circular train, feathers on the shoulders, and covered all but her face. Zendaya arrived in a Tommy Hilfiger dress inspired by Cinderella. Law Roach, Zendaya’s stylist arrived on the red carpet with her dressed as the fairy godmother. Roach waved a wand and Zendaya’s dress lit up and expanded.

Whilst we saw many amazing looks in 2018, 2019 was truly an iconic year. It was an extremely larger-than-life event, and both, the celebrities and designers, pulled off over-the-top iconic looks. Many on social media are excited to see if the designers and celebrities can match the theme this year.
