Over February 18th and 19th, 2024, there were two award shows that took place over Sunday and Monday. These were the People’s Choice Awards and the BAFTA’s.
The BAFTAs are the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards which took place on February 18, 2024. The 77th annual BAFTAs were hosted by David Tennant yet many on social media were wary about the hosting after last year. The 2023 BAFTAs were hosted by Ariana DeBose who did a female empowerment rap, which led to people saying it was “mortifying” and “awkward.”
During the BAFTAs Michael J. Fox, star of Back to the Future, made an appearance and presented the best film award to Oppenheimer. The star who is now 62 years old was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and rarely makes public appearances anymore.
Oppenheimer won the most awards of the night, winning seven. The film received awards for the best film, as presented by Michael J Fox, Cillian Murphy for leading actor, and best director. Robert Downey Jr also won an award for best supporting actor for Oppenheimer. The film Poor Things received five awards with Emma Stone winning leading actress.
There were many celebrities in attendance for the BAFTAs and some of the best dressed included Charithra Chandran, the Bridgerton star, wearing a stunning Sabina Bilenko sequin gown. Margot Robbie, who in the style of Barbie, wearing a Giorgio Armani pink and black silk gown, was also one of the best dressed celebrities on the red carpet.
The People’s Choice Awards took place on February 19th, 2024. It is an award show where fans pick their favourite films, television shows, artists, and actors of the year. Simu Liu, who starred in Barbie and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Some of the winners for the People’s Choice Awards were Barbie for both comedy and movie of the year. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes won an award for action movie of the year, and Rachel Zegler won action movie star of the year for the same.
For the music category, Taylor Swift won twice for pop artist of the year and female artist of the year, and the award for the male artist of the year went to Jung Kook. The song of the year was “Vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo. Taylor Swift also won awards for social celebrity of the year and concert of the year.
Sydney Sweeney was just one of the best dressed celebrities at the event, where she wore a red Mônot dress. Lucy Hale also looked stunning in a red strapless draped Christian Dior dress. Halle Bailey was another celebrity who was among the best dressed on the carpet, wearing a Roberto Cavalli dress, which was seemingly inspired by the Little Mermaid through its blue and green colouring.
