2024 BAFTA Nominations

Nominations for the 2024 BAFTA awards have been released, with the award ceremony to be held on February 18, 2024. The British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs, are an annual award show that celebrates the craft that goes into making films, games, and television shows. The award show will take place at the Southbank Centre in London.

The categories for the BAFTAs include Best Film, Best Actor/Actress, Rising Star Award, Best Supporting Actor, and many more. The nominations for the film contenders were released earlier today, on January 18, 2024, and some of the nominations are as follows.

For Best Film, some of the nominations are Oppenheimer and Poor Things. For Outstanding British Film, the nominations include Poor Things again, Saltburn, and Wonka. For Leading Actress, some of the nominations include Margot Robbie in Barbie, Carey Mulligan in Maestro, and Emma Stone in Poor Things. For the category of Leading Actor, there is Barry Keoghan in Saltburn, Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer, and Bradley Cooper in Maestro.

The nominations for Best Director include Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, Bradley Cooper for Maestro, and Andrew Haigh for All of Us Strangers. For Animated Films, the nominations are Elemental, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. There is also the category of Rising Star which is voted for by the public, unlike the other categories, and includes Phoebe Dynevor, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Mckenna-Bruce.

There are many other categories and nominations not mentioned such as Casting, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, and Special Visual Effects. The top nominations of the ceremony are Oppenheimer with thirteen nominations, Poor Things with eleven nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest with nine nominations, Maestro with seven, All of Us Strangers with six, and Barbie and Saltburn with five.

Oppenheimer, with the most nominations in the BAFTAs in 2024, has already won many awards including five Golden Globes and is up for many more awards this year, with well-known actor Robert Downey Jr being nominated for his supporting role in the film. Arguably, another well anticipated and enjoyed film by fans was Barbie. Despite only getting five nominations at the BAFTAs, Barbie has also won two Golden Globes and a Critics Choice Award for best comedy.

Oppenheimer was released on the July 21, 2023, the same day that Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, was released. This created news in both the media and on social media, when they were scheduled to be released on the same day, with both films having different messages and aesthetics.

However, the release worked out well for both films, with people taking it to social media and starting the “Barbenheimer” cultural phenomenon. The idea of “Barbenheimer” was supported by members of the cast of both films, and members of the public who not only dressed up for these films, but often went to see both in one day.

Towards the end of 2023, we saw the rise of another film on social media, Saltburn. Many took to social media to say that whilst the film had great cinematography, there were some questionable scenes, whilst others argued that the scenes were enjoyable and suited the role of the main character. This led to many people wanting to watch the film and give their opinion on it, making it a popular and enjoyable film,
