'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' Swings into Theaters

Fans are praising the highly anticipated animated film, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." The sequel hit theaters on June 2nd, 2023 in the United States.

The movie has so far made $208.6 million dollars in box office sales, already rivaling the original animation, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)” which grossed $375.4 million dollars. With the original film receiving critical acclaim and a dedicated following, the announcement of a sequel has generated immense excitement among moviegoers and comic book enthusiasts alike, particularly because of the cross-generational appeal this series has.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” saw the return of Academy award-winning directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with a new director, Joaquim Dos Santos. The second installment of this thrilling animation once again follows Miles Morales as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man who is thrown into the multi-verse, where he is met with a group of spider-people called the spider society. The fate of the multiverse itself lies in the hands of the group who often clash with one another and have differing approaches on how to save the multiverse.

The film focuses largely on Gwen Stacy, otherwise known as Spider-Woman from another dimension. “Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse” stars Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Brian Tyree Henry as Jeff Morales, and Luna Lauren Velez as Rio Morales.

Audience Response

The film is already raking in incredible fan and critic ratings with an IMDb score of 9.1/10 and a rotten tomatoes audience score of 96%. Although the film is rated PG, the complexity is unlike anything seen before in an animated film. Producers, Lord and Miller, reveal that the sequel has the largest crew of any animated movie ever and has 240 characters spread across six universes.

The Marvel legend, Spider-Man, has starred in twelve films. In a ranking of the films, ScreenRant places “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in the number one spot, claiming the film is, “beautifully designed, animated to perfection in a plethora of interesting, vibrant, and awe-inspiring styles.”

With the introduction of a new villain called, “The Spot,” fans speculate that his plotline will continue in the 2024 film, “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
